ABOUT US

WHO ARE WE?

The Women’s Midlife and Reproductive Health Network Africa (WoMAN) is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of African women during midlife and beyond. Our initiatives in Kenya and Tanzania address the unique challenges faced by women across all reproductive stages. WoMAN provides specialized support through:

Supporting awareness and empowerment to offer support for African women throughout reproductive transitions :

Many African women face unique challenges during menopause due to cultural perceptions, stigma, and limited access to information, often leading them to endure symptoms without seeking care. To address this, WoMAN conducts community outreach programs that educate and empower women, emphasizing the importance of seeking medical advice and support to manage symptoms effectively. Through networks and community initiatives, WoMAN provides practical support and promotes culturally appropriate approaches to encourage positive health-seeking behaviors for menopause and reproductive health across diverse African communities.

Advocating for policies that prioritize women’s health needs including reproductive health, midlife health and menopause:

African nations face a significant gap in healthcare policy for menopause management and financing to include midlife related health concerns into routing healthcare services. WoMAN advocates for policies that ensure affordable and accessible health services for menopausal women. This includes lobbying for government funding, insurance coverage, and the integration of menopause-related care into existing healthcare frameworks.

Strengthening the capacity of healthcare providers to better serve the needs of women in midlife

Healthcare providers often lack specialized training in menopausal health, leading to misdiagnoses or inadequate care.  WoMAN offers training programs for doctors, nurses, and midwives to enhance their understanding of menopause and improve their ability to support women through this transition. WoMAN works with institutions in Africa to catalyze the inclusion of training on menopause and management options in pre-service curricula for healthcare workers.

Supporting and conducting research to improve understanding of menopause and reproductive health issues specific to African women

Research on menopause and reproductive health in African women is limited, often due to socio-economic barriers and cultural taboos. WoMAN collaborates with academic institutions and research organizations to conduct studies that highlight the unique experiences of African women during menopause. By generating data and insights, WoMAN aims to inform public health strategies and tailor interventions that address the specific needs of midlife women in Africa.

At WoMAN, we center our work on three key pillars:

  • Research & Advocacy

We conduct research to better understand menopause and reproductive health issues unique to African women, while advocating for policies that prioritize their health needs. By engaging with policymakers and collaborating with advocacy groups, we aim to drive policy changes that improve menopause and reproductive health outcomes across Africa.

  • Awareness & Empowerment

We offer comprehensive education and awareness programs to empower African women with knowledge about menopause, reproductive health, and related issues. Our initiatives are culturally sensitive, tailored to respect and incorporate diverse beliefs about menopause and reproductive health across African communities. Additionally, we foster support networks and community initiatives to provide practical assistance and promote overall well-being during reproductive transitions.

  • Access to quality reproductive and midlife Healthcare services

We strengthen healthcare providers’ capacity to address reproductive health concerns, ensuring women have access to quality services, including screenings, treatments, and menopause support. Additionally, we promote the development of innovative solutions for reproductive health and menopause in African healthcare markets.
